Concept Development 4 - Site Placement

Site Placements

The next point of my development I looked at how I am going to place my design into the site as this is important in the development process. For this I investigated all the possibilities of how I could have my design on the site and the way the sun interacts with the site and buildings. Overall, I decided to use placement 2 for my design.


Site Placement 1

The 1st placement I looked into was having the main functions building to the north facing the lake and the classrooms to the south. This was the idea I initially had in mind when designing the nursery as I felt it fit nicely into the site and there is a nice flow to the building with the pathway being able to access the site from either way.


This idea allows the sun to still flow into the outdoor play area, which is great, meaning the children are getting light to the classrooms. However, if I were to use this idea, I would have to think of a way to create more shade.


Site Placement 2

The 2nd placement I looked into was placing the buildings next to each other with the classrooms being on the left and the main functions being on the right. I really like this idea as it creates connections between the buildings and the landscape more than placement 1. You can see how the geometric (hard design) connects well with the railway and the more curved/organic building links to the nature and forest side of the site. This outdoor space then allows me to get inspired and bring the water into the design more.


From looking at the sun path other the site this design really allows the outdoor learning/play area to get a good amount of sunlight and gives the classrooms a good amount of light.

For these reasons I have decided to use Site placement 2 for my design.



Site Placement 3

The 3rd placement that I investigated was having the classrooms looking onto the lake and the main functions to the south by the bastion. This idea was to give the classrooms a view out of the windows to create a better connection between the children and nature. One thing I don’t like about this placement is that the entrance of the building won’t be easily accessed and very closed off. I want this to be inviting for the children to feel like it’s a safe environment and by closing it off it could feel daunting. 

The sun path over this placement is good however due to the main functions building being tall there is going to be a large shadow overcast onto the outdoor learning/play area throughout the day.




Site Placement 4

The site placement 4 is similar to site placement 2 however flipped so the main functions are on the left and the classrooms on the right. I like this idea as it has an easy access point from the left into the building and has potential to build out onto the lake. 

The sun path over this placement is again like placement 2 and gives good direct sunlight into the outdoors learning/play area.

  My concept is all about the development of a frog and how this development is very similar to the growth of child development. With my main form I want to show how there is this growth in the buildings changing size around the site. This change will be done in an almost circular formation within the site. This is created with both my curved (learning spaces) and geometric (main functions) buildings through the form of them in a circular setting. The learning spaces are showing the life cycle from the start years when there is the start of the frog’s development as a tadpole. The change of the sizes getting bigger for each classroom shows how the tadpole will be getting larger and developing new skills like what the children are going through.
