 Concept Development Summary

The concept I have chosen to develop from my first initial ideas and further research is my life cycle of a frog idea with the tadpole form changing in size to show the development. I chose this idea as I want to bring the growth idea into my project but also create a design that will bring in children’s attention. From my letter I said how I want the space to be challenging but also exiting for the children as often children get bored or loose focus in specific environments. By designing my concept with a free flow and interesting, dynamic form it gives this excitement to the children and will make them happy to be in nursery. I also however don’t want to make it feel intimidating and want to create a safe, welcoming space for the children.

For developing my concept, I took feedback from Design studio and decided to look at having a curved vs geometric space. I started looking at how I can have a geometric building for the main functions and functions that are shared and then for the classrooms have a curved building giving fluidity to the development.

  My concept is all about the development of a frog and how this development is very similar to the growth of child development. With my main form I want to show how there is this growth in the buildings changing size around the site. This change will be done in an almost circular formation within the site. This is created with both my curved (learning spaces) and geometric (main functions) buildings through the form of them in a circular setting. The learning spaces are showing the life cycle from the start years when there is the start of the frog’s development as a tadpole. The change of the sizes getting bigger for each classroom shows how the tadpole will be getting larger and developing new skills like what the children are going through. This then leads onto the main function’s spaces with the hall, kitchen and staff spaces. These spaces are resembling the frog due to this being at the end of the life cycle.
